# Advancing IPFS Governance

IPFS (and libp2p) are officially taking big steps forward in project maturity, with independent foundations and funding structures!

While IPFS was invented and incubated at Protocol Labs, the open source community has played major roles from the start. Many other people and organizations have built new implementations and integrations, contributed to protocol design, provided public network services, and led working groups.

Now, it’s time to advance that independence. This blog post outlines a framework for long-term project health:
