To get a non-existent hash from the “ipfs get hash” command line, the command is stuck until the hash appears.
Is there any way to get it to return an error instead of getting stuck?

Error returns or timeouts are oft-requested, and would IMHO make a huge improvement. The most recent technical discussion is in https://github.com/ipfs/interface-ipfs-core/issues/58
