What is IPFS about? How to use it?

I simply want to download books I am searching for like alanbrooke’s ‘war diaries’ and can’t get elsewhere. Hope to find them here.
I downloaded/installed the desktop app.
And straightaway am lost.
Did a little reading around and it seems perhaps I’m in the wrong place? I can’t fit? Found where it specifies I should have unlimited bandwidth and all kinds of stuff: have to download a few gigs straight up I’m not sure why but it seems to be a whole collection of books.

I am getting the feeling that it expects me to be a node in a network and I must have a whole large data set for serving out and must have lots of bandwidth for the same reason.

Nope. Can’t do it.

Really just want something like z-lib where I can search for, find and download.

And in return upload some from time to time. Quite a lot if I an get a book copying machine - I have learned flatbed scanners ain’t the way.

So please, am I in the wrong place or can I use ipfs for what i want?

IPFS is a new web (web3), you have to know what site you want to go to. And no, there’s no “Google” for it beyond what’s available on web2.

That having been said, I remember a website that does what you are looking for:

/ipns/libgen.crypto/

Unfortunately, the Unstoppable Domains resolver seems to have some problems right now, so I went directly to the source to resolve it:

https://ud.me/libgen.crypto

As you can see, that address currently resolves to:

/ipfs/QmZA6gX5WarBrBX8ULsA2iYSXSeC5YzDSgdTyZg6GFQnW9

If you are running your own node, just use the following link:

http://localhost:8080/ipfs/QmZA6gX5WarBrBX8ULsA2iYSXSeC5YzDSgdTyZg6GFQnW9
