Off-Topic Discussion from "Social Media Architecture with IPFS"

I think it would be wise to look into the author of this thread before trying to help them build out infrastructure to meet their goals. Even just the Gab link they shared is a good start: Curtis Rock, SkD (@crockwave) • gab.com - Gab Social

Why would you make good tech political?

Why would you try to marginalize good open source tech that can help those of all political persuasions?

Let ideas speak for themselves

@christianbundy
While @crockwave looks like all I despise in politics (Not attacking the human being here, just desagreeing with the political ideas), trying to build yet another bubble, they got a point. Good tech is good tech. Complotism & co should be fought by dialogue. Censorship gives them yet another excuse to bark.

@crockwave , I’m not sure flagging your adversary’s post is a solution, and it looks to me like the censorship you want to fight.

When you review the FAQs, the flag was appropriate

Note that this type of discussion is also difficult for moderators. As a middleground, I’ve extracted some OT posts into a separate, unlisted thread, but encourage everyone here to focus on technology and avoid investing time in off-topics like this one.

Please try to be kind to each other, or at least follow the spirit of https://github.com/ipfs/community/blob/master/code-of-conduct.md#friendly-harassment-free-space

Technology is political. Spending effort helping people build bad technology (disinformation, harassment, authoritarianism, etc) isn’t neutral and I think we should be careful to spend our time wisely. If someone asks how to use a tool to do something bad, we shouldn’t help them. If we see our peers helping someone do something bad, we should remind them that helping people isn’t always a neutral act.

Hyperbole: If someone asked “how can I use a baseball bat to attack an innocent person”, it would be very silly to give them tips on their swing.

When someone links to their Gab profile and says “how can I use IPFS to build a social network” I think we should be honest with ourselves about the fact that they’re using this tech to establish far-right political goals. If that’s something you like, please help them. If that’s something you don’t like, please don’t help them.

I’m honestly shocked that IPFS is providing a platform for MAGA/QAnon/Gab content but “hey maybe look at their history” is harassment. What a bummer.

Edit: Could someone please quote which part of the code of conduct I’ve broken? cc: @lidel

Good censor mechanic in a ‘real’ P2P platform is user sided only. The users block what they dont want to see.
If ipfs implement a global censor mechanic to be able to block those websites then tomorrow it might be your website that will be asked to be taking down!
Very dangerous thing to implement

  1. This conversation isn’t happening on a P2P network.
  2. I’m not asking the IPFS moderators to block any websites. I’m asking them why they removed my comment.
  3. The IPFS team is not obligated to host any of our content, and they do have a mechanic to remove data from their servers.

I don’t see how your comment is relevant to this thread.

Well thats good to know, thx for sharing.

You may or may not be worth debating, but I am offering to debate you in another forum. I am willing to debate you in a public or private forum via:

  • E-mail
  • Twitter
  • Any of several instances on the Fediverse
  • MeWe
  • Facebook

I will continue the debate as long as rational responses are provided by you and as long as you are willing to debate.

This sound like you would like to see those website to be block, no?

No. MAGA and QAnon aren’t websites, and Gab isn’t hosted on IPFS.

I don’t think we don’t have anything to debate. I asked people to be mindful of your political positions before supporting your work and the IPFS moderators removed my post.

I feel I owe a public explanation of my actions:

Did not remove any posts, quite the opposite: first one was flagged as “inappropriate” and I removed that flag, restoring the post. Then I only moved it along with a few other ones to this new, separate topic.

This is not a statement of any position, nor censoring, just trying to keep original, technical thread on topic. I hope everyone understands I meant no harm to anyone.

Wishing you all a good weekend
